Video footage captured two female protesters from the group “Riposte Alimentaire” (Food Counterattack) throwing soup at the painting and expressing concerns about the agricultural system.

The protesters, wearing T-shirts with the slogan “food counterattack,” questioned the priorities between art and the right to healthy food.

The Louvre confirmed that the protective glass shielded the artwork, and the affected area was evacuated before reopening after cleaning. The museum intends to file a complaint against the incident.

Rachida Dati, France’s Minister for Culture, emphasized that “no cause” justifies targeting the Mona Lisa, considering it a part of cultural heritage for future generations.

The act follows recent farmers’ protests in Paris against rising fuel costs. The Mona Lisa has been safeguarded behind protective glass since the 1950s, following a past incident where it was damaged by acid.

In 2019, the museum upgraded to a more transparent form of bulletproof glass. In 2022, an activist threw cake at the painting, urging environmental considerations.
