Rema’s Biography

Divine Ikubor (born 1 May 2000), professionally known as Rema, is a vocalist, songwriter, and rapper from Nigeria. He was born in Benin City to a Christian family.

He grew up performing and rapping while in junior high school. He attended Ighile Group of Schools, Edo State, for his elementary and secondary schooling. His father and older sibling have passed away, leaving Rema to care for his mother.

Music Career

His musical career began in churches with Alpha P. In 2018, Rema posted a viral improvisation on Instagram to the song “Gucci Gang” by D’Prince. The post caught the attention of D’Prince, who flew the young artist to Lagos to offer him a record contract.

In 2019, Rema signed a record contract with D’Prince’s Jonzing World, a Mavin Records subsidiary owned by record producer Don Jazzy. His 2019 self-titled debut EP “Rema” reached number one on Apple Music Nigeria.

On 21 May 2019, Jonzing World, Mavins, and Diana Eneje released the music video for “Dumebi” from his self-titled EP, which features a cameo appearance by Diana Eneje. Ademola Falomo directed the video, which presently has 66 million views on YouTube.

In 2019, one of his other most popular songs from the EP became even more popular when it was added to the summer playlist of the former president of the United States, Barack Obama.

Rema announced in May 2021 that he will call his sound “Afrorave,” a subgenre of Afrobeats with influences of Arabian and Indian music, which has resulted in him having one of the largest fanbases in the nation, known as Ravers.

Rema and Ayra Starr were both announced as brand ambassadors for the ubiquitous soft drink Pepsi in September 2021.

Rema received an award on stage during his London concert on November 7, 2022, as his music had reached one billion streams worldwide.

Rema won Next Rated and was nominated for Viewer’s Choice at the thirteenth edition of The Headies, held on 19 October 2019. He received the Soundcity MVP Award for best new artist on January 12, 2020.

Rema was nominated for Best Viewers’ Choice: International Act at the 2020 BET Awards on June 15, 2020. He was nominated alongside Burna Boy and Wizkid, the only Nigerian artists nominated for the 2020 edition of the awards. “Woman” by Rema reached number fifteen on the World Digital Song Sales chart.
Rema’s song were featured on the FIFA 21 soundtracks in September 2020.
