Maintaining honest and open communication in relationships is key, but so is being alert to the warning signs that someone could be taking advantage of you.

Following your gut and being honest with your partner is important.  If you observe these signs, it could be advantageous to engage in a discussion regarding your concerns.  On the other hand, if you feel used and the behaviour persists, you should probably reconsider the relationship and think about leaving.

Keep in mind that an interest in each other’s happiness, open lines of communication, and respect are the foundations of a healthy relationship. Here are a few small signs that someone is using you and may be leaving soon:

  • Only gets in touch with you when needed: They usually get in touch with you when they are in need of something, be it resources, emotional support, or a favour.
  • Emotional detachment: They maintain an emotional distance or detachment, refusing to express their emotions or thoughts.
  • Avoiding Talking About Important Things: They avoid discussing important topics such as exclusivity, commitment, or the nature of the relationship.
  • Selfish Behavior: They never give your feelings much thought; instead, they constantly put their wants and needs ahead of yours.
  • Irregular Communication: When they first started talking, they were responsive and interested, but lately, they’ve been communicating less consistently.
  • Sudden Disinterest: Both emotionally and physically, they seem to have lost interest in you overnight.
  • Lack of commitment: They don’t want to talk about the future or say they don’t want to commit to any kind of serious relationship.
  • Limited availability: They are often unavailable or make plans at the last minute, showing a lack of consideration for your time and schedule.
  • Limited Public Presence: They avoid being seen with you in public or shy away from introducing you to their friends and family.
  • Financial exploitation: Their relationship is built on your ability to support them financially, and they depend on you for it on a regular basis.
  • Excuses and Broken Promises: In addition to making empty promises, they are quick to come up with reasons why they can’t meet or carry out their plans.
