Singer Ray Jacobs, Aka AUGUST 08, Dies At 31

American singer, songwriter, and producer Ray Jacobs, professionally known as AUGUST 08, has died at the age of 31. His label, Def Jam Recordings, confirmed the news, but did not disclose the cause of death.

August 08, a native of South Los Angeles, was a talented musician and a former member of the collective 88rising. The collective shared the news of his passing on Instagram, expressing their deep sorrow and gratitude for his friendship and mentorship. August 08 was known for his kindness, talent, and energy, which inspired and strengthened those around him.

Born Ray Jacobs, August 08 also went by the name August Grant. He developed a passion for drumming at a young age, thanks to his mother, aunt, and grandmother, who gifted him a drum machine. He later started producing music with his cousins and discovered a love for cinema, which influenced his music. We extend our deepest condolences to August 08’s family, friends, and fans during this difficult time. His talent and spirit will be greatly missed.

“The entire Def Jam family mourns the tragic loss of Ray ‘August 08’ Jacobs,” Def Jam wrote in an Instagram post Aug. 29. “A brilliant songwriter, an accomplished musician and a singular artist, August will remain in our memory as a beloved colleague and friend. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.”

Artist collective 88Rising, Jacobs’ former management prior to joining Def Jam Recordings, also confirmed his death on Instagram, writing, “It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Ray Jacobs, also known as AUGUST 08.”

“RIP August the kindest and most talented genius you will be missed beyond words,” 88Rising’s Aug. 29 post read. “Thank you for being an amazing mentor and a steadfast friend through all these years. We are forever grateful to you and the joy you brought in every room, through every song. Your energy, guidance and care gave so much inspiration and strength that will be carried on always.”

Jacobs, a native of South Los Angeles, developed a keen interest in music from an early age, largely influenced by his family. In a recent interview with Wonderland Magazine in November 2021, he revealed that his cousin Reako introduced him to the music software, FL Studio, which sparked his passion for music production. He spent a summer at his cousin’s house creating beats for leisure, and this experience ignited his love for music.

In 2018, Jacobs released his debut tracks, “Funeral,” “Lately,” and “Spiral,” and subsequently joined 88Rising. According to i-D, he caught the attention of Jhené Aiko, who recognized his exceptional talent and signed him to Allel Sound, her joint venture with Def Jam Recordings, in 2022.
