Stay Hydrated This Season- Ghana Meteorological Agency Tells Ghanaians

Raphael Osei Boakye, a chief forecaster at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, is urging the people of Ghana to prioritize hydration during the current intense Harmattan season, particularly in December and January 2023.

Attributing the severity of the season to the influx of a dry continental wind, Boakye emphasized the potential for respiratory infections due to the dehydrating effects of the weather.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, he advised, “We should drink a lot of water and stay hydrated throughout the period. Without drinking water, you could get sick. The weather is dry, and the possibility of people getting dehydrated is high. So drink enough water to prevent you from getting sick.”

Boakye also stressed the importance of wearing nose masks to reduce the intake of particles into the respiratory system, as the dry continental wind sweeps across the country. He explained that the prevailing dust conditions are accompanied by winds originating from the northern part of the continent.

Addressing street vendors, especially those selling food, Boakye urged them to take preventive measures to avoid dust contamination.

“For those who sell food on the streets, they should cover their meals to prevent dust from entering them. The dust conditions are severe, so we encourage them to take note of this. They should not only think of themselves and the profits they intend to make.”
