Ministry Of Energy Responds To Mahama’s “Wasted Years” Remark

The Energy Ministry released a statement on February 7, 2023, entitled “Ghana’s oil-producing profile under President Akuto- Addo impregnable,” in response to a tweet sent by former president John Dramani Mahama.

The ministry provides a rundown of oil-related initiatives undertaken by the Nana-Addo government in its announcement.

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum claims that “during the Akufo-Addo administration, Ghana has experienced an exceptional oil well drilling success rate from all exploratory wells completed from 2017 to date.” Also, “six of seven exploratory wells drilled during the time were successful, leading in seven finds.”

John Dramani Mahama had said that the Akufo-Addo government hadn’t done enough in the previous seven years to boost oil output in the upstream sector. The lack of progress in the oil and gas industry, he claims, is due to the current government’s avarice and stupidity in the face of national interest.

Despite the fact that the NDC government handed over two additional oil fields (TEN and Sankofa) to the Akufo-Addo administration in 2017, John Mahama referred to the progress as “wasted years” in a tweet he wrote on February 6, 2023.

“Wasted years! We bequeathed to the Akufo-Addo gov’t two new oil fields, TEN and Sankofa. Greed and ineptitude as against national interest means a sad reality of no additional production activity in our upstream oil sector in the last 7 years.” Mahama Tweeted”

The Energy Ministry, however, noted, “On the back of the existing data, the Ministry wishes to emphasize categorically, that the former President’s allegation cannot be substantiated by the available facts and should therefore be treated with the highest disrespect it deserves.”

They also mentioned that since 2017, the Akufo-Addo administration has found seven new oil fields.
