The Untold Story Behind Adomako Nyamekye’s Popular ‘Funeral Song’ Adwoa Pinamang
Adwoa Pinamang is a very popular song from veteran Highlife musician Adomako Nyamekye that is played at funerals.
Although the song was composed several years ago, it has become an anthem and a favourite of mourners who use the lyrics to express their grief during funerals across the length and breadth of the country.
Years later, on-air personality and content creator Emannuel Agyemang simplified and shared the theme behind the popular Adwoa Pinamang track. According to Emmanuel, the song was composed as an elegy in honour of Miriam Adwoa Pinamang, the late wife of his brother Abu Kwesi.
From the breakdown, we got to know Pinamang died with her son while she was in labour. Furthermore, Adomako Nyamakye, who was seeking asylum abroad, was overwhelmed by the sad passing of his sister in law so he hit the studio to record a song that has turned out to be an evergreen song used by Ghanaians to mourn their own loss during funerals.
The Highlife musician lamented the fact he could not step foot in Ghana to pay his last respects to the deceased while asking why the cold hands of death snatched Pinamang in such a cruel manner. Ultimately, Emannuel reminded everyone that contrary to the perception that Pinamang was Adomako Nyamekye’s wife, the woman was rather his sister-in-law, the wife of his brother Abu Kwesi.
