Theresa Abebrese: The Story Behind Daddy Lumba’s First Love

The song “Theresa Abebrese” was written in tribute to the lady who wasn’t just his first love but also a significant factor in his achievement when they met as classmates in high school.

In a recent interview posted on his YouTube website, Daddy Lumba explained that he was inspired to write the song by his late ex-girlfriend, Nana Konadu.

“I left Gyamase Secondary and went to Juaben in 1983. One of my teachers, Mr. Oshow, sent me to the school after he had also been transferred there. It was at Juaben that I met this amazing woman. She had everything I had never seen in a woman before.”  he said.

“If we’re talking about someone I met and actually loved, that would be Theresa. He said, “She was my very first love.”

According to Daddy Lumba, Theresa completely improved his high school experience by seeing to his safety and well-being. After completing secondary school, he disclosed that Theresa provided him with his greatest opportunity by arranging his trip to Germany.

Daddy Lumba says that this is one of the only songs in his catalogue that he has never performed live because he gets too emotional every time he listens to it.

“Because if I starts singing, I’d have to stop and get off the stage. Every time I play the song, it hurts me because I think about how pretty, kind, and smart Theresa was, and I know that a woman of her calibre is no longer in this world. I’ve never been able to do it on stage before, but I’ll do my best to do it in her honour one day.” he added.
