Trevor Noah Becomes First Black Person To Win Emmy Award For Outstanding Variety Series

Trevor Noah has achieved a significant milestone in his career by winning an Emmy award. Despite facing 11 nominations and a four-month delay due to the Hollywood strikes, he persevered and made history as the first African and black TV host to win in his category.

The talented comedian was honoured with the Outstanding Variety Series award for his show, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

“This story has been so long, so crazy, so wonderful,” Noah said in accepting the award. “Thank you so much to the team and the person I always thank, the crazy genius, Jon Stewart. Thank you for calling me up and asking me to come join you on this crazy journey.”

Noah also made a humorous remark about ending the winning streak of HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver in the variety talk category. This year, a change in the rules resulted in Last Week Tonight being moved into the scripted variety category (which it also emerged victorious in), thereby creating an opportunity for a new winner in the talk category for the first time since 2016.

“I told you!” Noah exclaimed. “I told you we would beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category. We did it! We got rid of John Oliver!”

Noah is the first person of colour to front a winner for variety talk series and its predecessor category — outstanding variety, music or comedy series — since In Living Color, created by and starring Keenen Ivory Wayans, won the award in 1990.

Additionally, Noah reacted to his win on Facebook by saying it is an honour for him to achieve this milestone in his career.

In addition to Trevor Noah’s well-deserved win, other notable winners included Succession and The Bear, both securing six wins each, followed by Beef with five wins. Furthermore, the legendary British musician, Elton John, joined an elite group of individuals known as EGOT winners.

By winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, Elton John became the 19th person to achieve this prestigious feat, joining the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, Viola Davis, Jennifer Aniston, and many others.
