Two Dead As Train Crashes Into Lagos Staff Bus in Nigeria

On Thursday, a train travelling through PWD/Shogunle in Ikeja hit a bus carrying employees of the Lagos State government, killing two people.

“The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says that the accident hurt several state government workers. “Two adult female staff of the State Government were killed, and several injured were evacuated; the state government personnel bus was at the PWD/Sogunle rail crossing when a train coming into Lagos from Abeokuta crashed it.”

It was learned that the blue staff bus was attempting to cross the rails as the train approached. The train slammed the bus, dragging it from PWD Bus Stop to Shogunle, where it came to a stop.

According to Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu’s statement, the accident was caused by the staff bus driver’s reckless driving. “Investigation gathered revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was due to reckless driving on the part of the BRT bus driver while trying to beat the train traffic signal before the moving train rammed into the BRT bus,” the statement reads.

“Unfortunately, two adults were confirmed dead and several people seriously injured. The injured victims have been administered first aid treatment by the agency’s medical team (paramedics) and LASAMBUS officials, well stabilized and being transported to the trauma center at LASUTH Ikeja for further treatment.”

In the meantime, members of the LASEMA, NEMA, Police, FRSC, Civil Defence, and Nigeria Railway Corporation teams have arrived on the spot.
