U.N. Celebrates Kofi Annan On Fifth Anniversary Of His Death

Renowned Ghanaian diplomat, Kofi Annan, passed away in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2018.

Kofi Annan served the United Nations as Secretary-General from 1997 to 2006, a position he attained after what felt like a lifetime of dedication to the organisation. While in office, he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

On the fifth anniversary of his death, the current Secretary-General of the United Nations and the rest of the UN family remembered on the global principles that Annan fought for as the world’s chief diplomat. Social media accounts of the United Nations shared photos, quotations, videos, and other content about Annan.

“Friday marks five years since the passing of former @UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. “I was honoured to call Kofi Annan a mentor and proud to call him a friend. His legacy as a global champion for peace remains an inspiration in our lives and our work,” the current UN chief Antonio Guterres stated in a tweet.

On April 8, 1938, Kofi Annan was born in Kumasi, Ghana. After marrying Nane, he started a family that has since grown to include three kids and five grandkids.

He passed away on August 18, 2018, at the age of 80, from a brief illness at a hospital in Bern, Switzerland. Until the day he passed away, he continued to contribute to the activities of his foundation.
