Vic Mensa Spends Cold Night Outside To Raise Awareness For Homeless Crisis

Vic Mensa, a Ghanaian hip-hop artiste based in Chicago, has worked with Covenant House Illinois to spend a night out in the cold to help raise awareness and combat the growing homeless crisis in his home city, dubbed “Sleep Out: Chicago.”

Mensa and other people will sleep outside at the event to simulate a night in Chicago’s bitter cold.
Mensa has also actively supported the homeless community through other initiatives. In November 2020, he founded his own non-profit organisation, “Save Money, Save Life,” which focuses on training first responders in Chicago’s most dangerous neighbourhoods and assisting in the placement of mental health professionals in those areas.

In addition, Mensa spent a night in the cold to raise money for a homeless shelter earlier this year. Chance The Rapper, a Grammy-winning rapper, joined him and encouraged his fans to donate to Covenant House Illinois.

Vic Mensa is dedicated to making sure the voices of homeless people are heard, and it has become one of the most outspoken political voices of our time.

Vic’s good friend Englewood Barbie, who has been feeding and sleeping under the viaduct with the homeless for weeks to raise awareness, is present.

Vic and Barbie are trying to get $1 million so they can open a place for homeless people to stay. The fundraising campaign has already raised over $126,000.

Homeless crisis in America

The COVID-19 pandemic and record levels of inflation, which are mostly to blame for rising apartment rents, have made the US homeless crisis worse.

As of January 2020, an estimated 580,500 people were homeless in the United States. Between January 2000 and January 2015, the number of homeless people using nightly shelter services in New York City increased from approximately 20,000 to over 60,000.

The current homeless crisis can be traced back decades to policies that stopped enough homes from being built in the United States. The number of homeless people is worst in places with very low vacancy rates and where even “low income” housing is still too expensive for most people. Democratic-led states have dealt with this issue more frequently than Republican-led states.
