Voter Registration: Two Arrested For Attempted Double Registration

The Electoral Commission (EC) in Wa has arrested two people trying to register twice during in ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

The Wa municipal electoral officer, Ben Alaglo, made this announcement during a Tuesday visit to the Wa registration centre.

“Initially, we wanted to hand them over to the police, but we warned them and allowed them to go. When we asked them, they said they thought they did not register in 2016, which is why they came to register again.”

“I asked my officers to tell those who are here to register that if anyone has already registered, he or she should not attempt registering again because the machines will detect them and they will be made to face the law”, he said.

Over 40 people registered and received ID cards at the Wa registration centre at 13:40 HRS. According to the GNA, there wasn’t a long line because not many people showed up to register. When asked why there weren’t more people waiting to be registered when he arrived at 06:30 HRS, the director of the municipal EC said, “I thought by the time I get here, the yard will be full.”

According to Alaglo, the exercise kicked off at around 8:00 a.m., and their centre was the first in the region to begin registration by hitting the database. Registration centre EC technician Louis Arthur assured that the exercise was proceeding without a hitch and that registration machines were functioning normally.

In preparation for this year’s District Level Election (DLE), the EC is organising a limited voter registration exercise so that all eligible voters in the country can get their voter’s ID card. The exercise will run from Monday, August 27, at 0800 HRS, to Sunday, October 2, at 1700 HRS.

The EC anticipated that 1,350,000 people would be eligible to register as voters in the upcoming 2023 voter registration exercise because of the passage of time.
