Western Region: Assemblyman Drowns While Travelling To Campaign

A headteacher and incumbent assemblyman, Manasseh Addison Sackey, met his unfortunate end as he drowned in a river while on his way to campaign on Monday, December 4.

According to Graphic Online, the sad event took place in Tarkwa, Western Region. Sackey, who was also known as Teacher Obour, was seeking re-election in the Teberebie electoral area. This incident has cast a somber shadow over the local electoral landscape, as it occurred in a river connecting Aklika.

Sackey was part of a group of approximately five individuals who were traveling to nearby villages for the campaign. Despite warnings from his campaign crew to avoid the journey, Sackey insisted that it was a short distance and that he would be able to return promptly.

Tragically, while in the middle of the river, the canoe capsized, resulting in the drowning of Sackey and another individual. Three survivors from the incident returned to report the tragedy. A search team was immediately dispatched, and Sackey’s lifeless body was recovered around 6:00 pm, approximately four hours after the incident occurred at 2:00 pm.

During an interview on Citi FM, Prestea FM journalist Nana Esi Brew Monney shared the heartbreaking details of the incident. She mentioned that the chief of the area declined to comment, and efforts were underway to reach the municipal chief executive for further information.

The body of the deceased has been taken to the Tarkwa municipal mortuary.

This incident bears similarities to a previous election season, where a former assembly member in the same constituency faced a similar fate two weeks before the elections four years ago.
