Why I Lied That I Was From Jamaica- Efia Odo

Efia Odo has disclosed that she once lied about her African heritage to conceal her true identity. She said growing up in the United States, she faced ridicule from Americans who mocked her for being black and coming from Africa.

To put an end to the taunting, she resorted to claiming she was half Jamaican, which effectively halted the trolling. This revelation was made in a recent post on X, in response to a similar sentiment expressed by Davido during an interview.

Davido mentioned that ten years ago, it was considered uncool to admit being from Nigeria, and many Africans would falsely claim to be Jamaican to avoid the stigma associated with their true nationality.

Reacting, Efia said:

When I was in junior high school, my African-American classmates used to tease me for being African. They used to call me names like African booty scratcher so I would lie and say I’m half Jamaican. Sad but true
