Why We Don’t Like Awards- Music Duo R2Bees

Music duo R2Bees (Refuse to be Broke) has discussed their decision to distance themselves from award schemes in Ghana, specifically the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, in a recent interview.

Comprised of rapper Omar Sterling, also known as Paedae, and singer Mugeez, the duo explained that their primary focus as musicians is to fulfil their core responsibilities to the best of their abilities, while simultaneously satisfying their fans.

They emphasized that accolades hold little value and are merely illusions and plastic, failing to truly reflect the hard work put in by artists.

R2Bees further expressed that their greatest achievements lie in the financial success they have attained through their craft. From overcoming poverty and rising from obscurity, they have managed to establish themselves in the music industry.

For them, the real measure of success is the monetary rewards they receive, rather than any awards that may come their way.

“Award is a mere illusion, it’s just a plastic. When you win an award, it’s pride and in life, anything that magnifies your ego will kill you. So no need to put your hope and life in praises and recognition, it will kill you,” Paedae told Adom FM.

Paedae went on to say that many of their awards are still with friends who took it on their behalf during their absence at award events. He made an elaborate narrative, arguing that the mission of award schemes to celebrate talent is just a fallacy.

“We live in an abundant world and we are killing ourselves with competition. For you to win an award, it means someone has to lose, why can’t we all win together? Putting too much emphasis on awards is where our industry has got it all wrong,” he stated.

“Award scheme is not even an event that celebrates artistes because most of them will go home sad. Everybody has worked so hard, for you to be nominated it means you’ve done so well, so why didn’t people and the board like it to vote you as winner,” Paedae argued.
