About NAACP Awards

The NAACP Image Awards is an annual event hosted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in the United States. This prestigious ceremony recognizes exceptional achievements in various fields such as film, television, theatre, music, and literature.

The awards are voted on by NAACP members across more than 40 categories. In addition to the regular awards, honorary accolades like the President’s Award, the Chairman’s Award, the Entertainer of the Year, the Activist of the Year, and the Hall of Fame Award are also presented. Beyoncé holds the record for the most wins as a solo artist, with an impressive 25 victories.

The inaugural NAACP Image Awards took place on August 13, 1967, and were organized by prominent activists Maggie Hathaway, Sammy Davis Jr., and Willis Edwards, who were leaders of the Beverly Hills-Hollywood NAACP branch.

Initially, the ceremony was recorded for television by NBC, but it wasn’t until 1996 that it began airing in primetime. There were a few years when the awards were not held due to changes in timing.

For instance, in 1973, the timing was adjusted to honour the previous calendar year, and from 1981 to 1990, the ceremony took place later in the year. In 1991, the timing was too late to honour the same year, and in 1995, there was no awards ceremony at all.
