AFCON 2023: Egypt Fights Back To Grab A Draw In 2-2 Thriller With Mozambique

In a thrilling opening Group B match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Egypt showcased resilience as Mohamed Salah’s late penalty secured a dramatic 2-2 draw against Mozambique, preventing a potential upset.

Egypt took an early lead with Mohammed Mustafa finding the net just two minutes into the game. Despite dominating the first half, the Pharaohs failed to capitalize on numerous chances, entering halftime with only a slim 1-0 advantage.

After the break, Mozambique made tactical changes, introducing Bruno Langa and Clesio Bauque. The adjustments paid off when Witiness Quembo rose to a cross from Macandza, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute. Substitute Clesio Bauque then shocked Egypt by putting Mozambique in the lead three minutes later.

In a remarkable turn of events, Egypt managed to equalize in injury time with the assistance of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention. Mostafa was brought down by a Mozambique defender, leading to a crucial penalty.
