How Ghana Can Qualify For AFCON Last-16 After Surrendering 2-Goal Lead Against Mozambique

Ghana’s hopes of advancing in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) were dealt a blow as they were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Mozambique in the group stage.

Two penalties from Jordan Ayew had Ghana comfortably ahead and looking well placed to finish second in the group behind Cape Verde, but a late equaliser by Mozambique’s Reinildo Mandava in stoppage time denied Ghana a crucial victory and effectively sealed their exit from the tournament.

The draw meant that Ghana failed to secure a win in the 2023 AFCON, having previously lost 1-2 to Cape Verde and drawn with Egypt in the group stage. The result put Ghana’s qualification for the knockout stages in jeopardy, as they faced the prospect of being eliminated from the tournament.

The draw was a significant setback for Ghana, as it left them winless in the 2023 AFCON and facing an early exit from the competition.

During the pre-match press conference, Conde discussed Mozambique’s strategy, emphasising their commitment to giving their best—playing at “200%”—in their quest to defeat Ghana. Recognising Ghana’s quality and the challenges they have encountered in securing victories in the tournament, Conde acknowledged the frustration within the Black Stars’ camp. He pledged to capitalise on this frustration during the upcoming game.

Looking at the schedule for the third-placed teams, it is so nearly official. Ghana will be out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations unless three results go their way.

Cameroon MUST draw with Gambia then Morocco MUST beat Zambia by a certain scoreline and DR Congo MUST beat Tanzania.
