Alan Kyerematen Resigns From NPP, Set To Contest 2024 Elections as Independent Candidate

Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has quit the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and is set to contest the 2024 elections as an independent candidate.

On Monday, September 25, 2023, Alan submitted his resignation letter to the NPP, stating that he was no longer interested in being a member of the party.

He gave a press conference shortly after that to make the announcement that he would run as an independent in 2024. He is currently starting a movement with the slogan “Movement for Change” with the monarch butterfly as its emblem.

The NPP is trying to end this eight-year cycle of government change. After a poster advertising his scheduled press conference at the Movenpick Hotel on Monday afternoon was released by his advisers and fans, rumors regarding Alan Kyerematen’s departure and independent presidential ambition grew over the weekend and made NPP members uneasy.

The speculation surrounding Alan’s potential withdrawal from the NPP presidential race had actually begun prior to September 5, 2023, when he officially announced his decision. Alan had been shortlisted as one of the top five candidates for the final selection on November 4, 2023.

However, there were concerns among certain individuals that he would not succeed in the November 4 election, given the popularity of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who were considered the frontrunners in the Special Super Delegates conference.

In the August 2023 Special Delegates conference, Alan secured a third-place finish, receiving less than 100 votes out of a total of over 900 votes. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, whom some regarded as an unlikely presidential candidate, recently surpassed Alan, who had been in the race for over 16 years. Alan’s name first emerged in 2005 as a potential replacement for then-President John Agyekum Kufuor, who was set to retire on January 6, 2009, as the leader of the NPP.

In 2007, Alan competed against 16 other candidates and finished in second place, as Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is now the President of Ghana, emerged as the leading candidate. Akufo-Addo has been the party’s leader since 2007 and has consistently defeated Alan Kyerematen in subsequent NPP presidential primaries.

With President Akufo-Addo’s retirement scheduled for January 6, 2025, the NPP is currently seeking a suitable replacement. Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as a strong contender for the position, garnering significant support from party members. He received an overwhelming endorsement of over 50 percent of the votes at the special delegates conference held in August 2023.

Tru News Report previously mentioned that there were unconfirmed reports claiming that failed New Patriotic Party (NPP) aspirant Alan Kyeremanten was planning to start his own political party soon after leaving the NPP.

Online news source MyNewsGH first made the report, saying Mr Kyeremanten would make a statement in this regard, apologize to the NPP and Ghanaians for his abrupt departure, and explain why he did it. Additionally, it is believed that a significant portion of Alan Kyeremanten’s supporters agree with his plan to split off and create a new political party under his direction in advance of the 2024 General Elections.

In the same vein, following Alan Kyerematen’s seemingly warpath with the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) which saw him pull out of the flagbearership race, ace broadcaster Afia Pokua aka Vim Lady has made a shocking prediction about the next phase of his political career.

As per her statement, it is possible that Mr. Alan Kyerematen may align himself with the primary opposition party, the National Democratic Congress, and collaborate with John Dramani Mahama in the forthcoming elections.

She said she has examined the contents of Alan’s press release, which elucidates his decision to withdraw from the flagbearership position, and believes that his decision was motivated by frustration and a desire for retribution. She suggests that Alan may seek to retaliate against the NPP by joining forces with Mahama.

“Alan’s letter proves that he has nothing to lose. he has achieved a lot in life and he can decide to retire. He can also decide that he will pay the party back in their own coin. He is a wounded lion. He could partner with John Mahama and become his running mate just to spite the party, just for diabolic reasons,” Vim Lady stated on Okay FM.

She cited an example where Mr. Mahama was with Alan throughout his mother-in-law’s funeral, while most NPP members were absent.

“Do you know when Alan’s mother-in-law recently died, a lot of NPP members didn’t attend the funeral? Mahama was there. Throughout the funeral, John Mahama was there.
