The family of the late Christian Atsu, led by their de facto spokesperson Abraham Twasam has said Maria Claire Rupio have been asked politely not to fly to Ghana to observe the one-week memorial service of the former player.
Abraham Twasam explained that Maria Claire Rupio wanted to be in Ghana but was told to wait until the family decided on a date for the funeral.
In a recent interview, Atsu’s relative asserted that the family in Ghana and Claire Rupio, who resides in the UK with their three children, maintain regular contact.
“His wife calls us every day. She calls us every morning to ask us what is going on. She always says the children worry her, so she is always calling us to hear from us,” Abraham Twasam stated in an interview that was published by Pak MediaGh.
“We’ve told her to wait until the funeral so she comes. We will give the children local names so that people will know they are from Ghana,” he added.
Meanwhile, former Ghanaian international footballer Charles Taylor has suggested that the Ghana Football Association’s plan to retire the Black Stars’ number 7 jersey of Christian Atsu in his honor doesn’t make sense.
Recall that days ago, Linford Boadu, the chairman of the Eastern Regional Football Association (RFA), revealed the Ghana FA’s intention to consider retiring the Black Star’s number 7 jersey in Atsu’s honour.
However, Tailor who formerly played for Hearts of Oak and Kotoko reacted to this development on Angel TV that the move is a misplaced priority while being interviewed by seasoned Sports presenter Saddick Adams aka Sports Obama.
He argued that despite the accomplishments of legendary football players across the world, their respective nations never retired their jerseys.
The 41-year-old who once dazzled the local league with his soccer artistry criticized GFA’s plans as unnecessary and questioned the Association’s motivation in honouring Christian Atsu with such distinction after they excluded him from the Black Stars for some time now.
Charles Taylor, who criticized the GFA’s action as unnecessary, also questioned the association’s justification for offering Christian Atsu such recognition in light of their years-long refusal to invite the player from Hatayspor to the Black Stars team. Click here to read more.
