Fans of the popular animated Nickelodeon TV series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” have reason to celebrate, as Netflix has announced the release of a live-action adaptation of the show.
The streaming giant released the first official teaser for the series on November 9, 2023, revealing that the show will premiere on February 22, 2024.
The original animated series premiered on Nickelodeon in February 2005 and ran for three seasons, each covering the quest of Aang, the last Airbender, to master one of the other three elements (Water, Earth, Fire).
The show was hugely popular and critically acclaimed, earning praise for its sophisticated storytelling, universal themes, and skillful incorporation of East Asian art and mythology. Netflix added all three seasons of the show to its streaming library in 2020, and within four days, the series hit the top spot on the platform and spent 60 days in the top-10 list.
The streaming giant then greenlit a live-action adaptation of the show, which has been in the works for five years and is reportedly costing $15 million per episode.
