Bayer Leverkusen Wins First-Ever Bundesliga Title

Bayer Leverkusen has won its first-ever Bundesliga title by defeating Werder Bremen 5-0 on Sunday.

This victory ended Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign as champions, making Leverkusen the first team since Borussia Dortmund in the 2011-12 season to claim the Bundesliga trophy.

Leverkusen took the lead in the 25th minute when Victor Boniface successfully converted a penalty after Jonas Hofmann was fouled inside the penalty box.

They came close to extending their lead in the 38th minute, but Amine Adli’s left-footed shot hit the crossbar. Just before halftime, Werder Bremen had a chance to equalize, but Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky made a crucial save to maintain his team’s lead.

In the 60th minute, Granit Xhaka, a former Arsenal player, doubled Leverkusen’s advantage with a superb first-time shot from outside the box. Florian Wirtz, who came on as a substitute in the second half, scored the third goal for Leverkusen with a powerful strike from distance.

He then added another goal in the 83rd minute, calmly finishing after receiving a well-placed pass from Exequiel Palacios. Unfortunately, the celebrations were marred by some home fans invading the pitch.

In the 90th minute, he sealed his hat trick, once again inciting fans to storm the field, resulting in the referee blowing the final whistle.

Led by Xabi Alonso, the team has clinched the league title with five games remaining, accumulating an impressive 79 points, a staggering 16 points ahead of second-placed Bayern. Furthermore, they have shattered the Bundesliga record for the highest number of unbeaten matches in a single season.
