Becca Biography

Rebecca Akosua Acheampomaa Acheampong, born in August 15, 1984, is a Ghanaian vocalist, songwriter, and actress who goes by the mononym Becca.

Becca was born in Ghana’s Kumasi. She is the first female of nine children and the fifth born. During her childhood, Becca was quite involved in religious and school activities. She attended both Morning Star and Wesley Girls’ High School, where she was eager to demonstrate her vocal dexterity at talent showcases. She matriculated from Croydon College and subsequently became an educator and child care worker.

Becca moved to Ghana and inked a record deal with Kiki Banson’s EKB Records. She attended the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration for her studies. Becca earned a master’s degree in brands and communication management from the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) and was recognised as the class valedictorian.

Music Career

She first rose to prominence as a contestant in the second season of the annual singing competition Mentor on TV3.

Sugar,” her 2007 debut studio album, earned her five nominations at the 2008 Ghana Music Awards, including Record of the Year for “You Lied to Me.” On May 16, 2013, Becca released her second studio album, “Time 4 Me.” It features cameos by 2face Idibia, MI, King Ayisoba, Trigmatic, Jay Storm, Sarkodie and Akwaboah. In Ghana, the album was certified two times platinum.

Becca has been recognised by Kora Award, National Youth Achievers Award, Ghana Music Awards, and 4Syte TV Music Video Awards.

In 2013, she headlined the Girl Talk annual concert, which began in 2011. Becca ranked number 94 on E.tv Ghana’s 2013 list of Ghana’s 100 most influential individuals.

In March 2021, 3Music Network ranked Becca among the top 30 most influential women in music. Becca has collaborated with Hugh Masakela and MI Abaga, among others.

In 2007, Becca began production on her debut studio album, “Sugar.” The 12-track album was recorded in both English and Twi. It was preceded by “You Lied to Me” as the main single. This song was released in 2007 and features Kwabena Kwabena on vocals. The song’s music video was filmed and directed in Ghana. On November 13, 2007, Becca released the album in Ghana. Hugh Masekela was featured on her single “I Love You.” “Sugar” was released in South Africa concurrently with Hugh Masekela’s Live at the Market Theatre (2007) album.

“Time 4 Me,” the second studio album by Becca, was released on May 16, 2013. The album, according to Becca, is a musical voyage inspired by her thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. The album features guest vocals from 2face Idibia, MI, King Ayisoba, Trigmatic, Jay Storm, and Akwaboah. The album yielded the singles “Forever,” “Push,”Bad Man Bad Girl,” “No Away,” and “Follow the Leader.”

The album was distributed to ten thousand admirers who purchased the Thursday edition of Graphic Showbiz newspaper. “Time 4 Me” was awarded double platinum status in Ghana. Becca embarked on a campus tour across the nation to promote the album. Her 2011 single “Africa Woman” was included on the album as a bonus track; the song is a melodic tribute to the fortitude and character of African women.

Samad Davis filmed and directed the music video for “African Woman” in Ghana; it begins with a quote and transitions into landscape shots of Becca. Becca released “Forever” and “Push” as the album’s main and follow-up singles, respectively, in 2011. The guest vocalists on “Push” are King Ayisoba and Trigmatic. John Dumelo, Yvonne Okoro, and Yvonne Nelson make cameo appearances in the “Push” music video, which was uploaded to YouTube on 17 May 2011.

The album’s third single “Bad Man Bad Girl” was released in February 2012; it features vocals by 2face Idibia and was recorded during the summer of 2011. The “Bad Man Bad Girl” music video was filmed in Accra and other areas of Ghana. The M.I-assisted composition “No Away” was released as the album’s fourth single on June 22, 2012. The track was recorded in Ghana and Nigeria and then blended in South Africa. The “No Away” music video was filmed in South Africa and uploaded to YouTube on August 12, 2012, lasting a total of 4 minutes and 11 seconds.

Kasapreko Company Limited and EKB Records invested $50,000 in the video production. It was one of the most expensive videos released by a Ghanaian artist at the time due to its production costs. The video was unveiled at a ceremony held at Accra’s XL Club.

Becca released “Follow the Leader” as the album’s fifth single on 17 June 2013. The music video for her song “Time 4 Me” was filmed in Yokohama and Tokyo and was released by EKB Records on June 25, 2013. Becca performed at the Accra International Conference Centre for the series finale of MTN’s Heroes of Change. Launching her second studio album in Accra on 26 July 2013, she performed with recording engineer Kwame Yeboah (and his Ohia beye Ya ensemble). On 20 December 2013, she headlined the Girl Talk concert’s third installment at the National Theatre of Ghana.

The song “Move” was released by Becca on April 12, 2014. It debuted on Bola Ray’s Drive Time show on Joy FM and featured vocals by South African band Uhuru. The tune was composed by Becca and Kiki Banson and produced by Kaywa. The “Move” music video was uploaded to YouTube on May 1, 2014, and it features cameos by Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Hugh Masekela. Flex Ghana’s Kwame Dadzie assessed the song and concluded that its rhythm is identical to “Khona.” Allsports Ghana reported on 24 March 2014 that Becca would perform prior to the start of Ghana Premier League matches to promote the league.
