Davido’s First Grammy Award Delays As South Africa’s Tyla Grabs Best Global Music Performance

Davido’s pursuit of his first Grammy award continues after failing to secure any wins in the three categories he was nominated for at the 66th Grammy Awards.

Despite being nominated for Best Global Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best African Music Performance, Davido did not emerge victorious on Sunday night.

Similarly, the four other Nigerian artists who were nominated, namely Burna Boy, Olamide, Ayra Starr, and Asake, also did not receive any awards during the ceremony.

On the other hand, South Africa’s Tyla celebrated her first Grammy win by claiming the Best Global Music Performance category at the Grammys. She triumphed over a lineup of Nigerian artists, including Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, and Ayra Starr.

Before the Grammy ceremony, Davido had expressed confidence in his chances of winning his first Grammy. In an interview with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly, he mentioned that he would celebrate exuberantly if he were to secure the award for the Best African Music Performance category.

Furthermore, Davido emphasized that the inclusion of an African music category in the prestigious global music awards was long overdue.

“I feel good being a nominee for the first time and getting three nominations. But the Best African Music Performance category feels long overdue for African music to be celebrated. I’m talking about generations way before mine: Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade… Sunny Ade has been nominated, I believe, but now there is an African category.

“If there was an African category years ago, a lot of people would have had the opportunity to be recognised by the Grammy. Finally, at least it is happening now,” Davido said.

In a separate interview conducted earlier this year, Davido expressed his optimism by stating that he has been praying to achieve a Grammy award in his illustrious career.

“Everybody knows what one of my prayer points is now. I have been nominated for three Grammys. So, everybody knows what I am praying for every day I wake up,” he said.

Unfortunately, his fervent aspiration failed to materialize last night. Nevertheless, he remains at the pinnacle of his performance, and we remain optimistic that he will bounce back with even greater strength and uphold his consistency to secure an accolade.
