Elon Musk And Tech Leaders Call For Halt In AI Development; It Is A “Dangerous Race”

Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and other tech industry leaders have called for a brief pause in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development in an open letter published on Wednesday.

Musk, Wozniak and more than 1,100 others in the technology industry all signed an open letter from Future of Life Institute.

The letter raises concerns about the risks of developing nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete, and replace humans.

The letter also questions whether we should let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth. The letter highlights the need to consider the risks of AI and to ensure that we maintain control of our civilization.

The concerned leaders call the rapid growth a “dangerous race,” and they’re asking labs to take a 6-month break to allow for further risk assessment on AI. They’re also asking the government to intervene if developers refuse to pause.

This is not the first time that Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak have raised concerns about AI. In 2015, they signed a letter presented at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aires, Argentina, calling for a ban on warfare AI and autonomous weapons.

Musk and Hawking have warned that AI is “our biggest existential threat” and that the development of full AI could “spell the end of the human race.” However, Wozniak has recently changed his mind on AI, stating that robots would be good for humans, making them like the “family pet and taken care of all the time.”

Elon Musk has been an outspoken AI commentator and has reiterated his calls for safety checks at the World Government Summit in Dubai.

Musk co-founded OpenAI which created ChatGPT, but says the lack of regulations in place to keep AI’s development in check is a cause for concern.
