Ex-MP Praises Police Professionalism Under Dampare

The former Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa North, Timothy Ataboadey Awontiirim, has expressed his perspective on the recent allegations made against the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

He asserts that it would be challenging to exploit the police force for bad intentions under the leadership of the current IGP. Awontiirim made this statement in response to claims made by forty retired officers that the IGP had postponed their promotions. “If you do your work well, you will be promoted in the police service,” he said.

During an interview conducted on the GTV breakfast show on September 20, 2023, he expressed support for an elevated level of professionalism within the ranks of police officers, emphasising the need for tackling and reducing cases of inappropriate conduct.

“I want to see professionalism on behalf of the police, and they should put a stop to some inappropriate behaviours portrayed by some of them.”

In response to concerns about promotions in public offices, he said that more could be done to make sure that promotions are based on merit. In addition, he praised the current IGP for his work to improve the quality of the police force in the country and stressed the importance of backing him up, citing the IGP’s success in instituting discipline within the police force as an example.

“Under the leadership of the current IGP, it would be increasingly difficult to misuse the police force for destructive purposes,” he added.

He talked about how important it is to have a police force that is knowledgeable, fair, and professional. Discussions about police promotions highlight the importance of professionalism and meritocracy in maintaining the efficiency of the police force.
