Leaked Tape: Dampare To Appear Before Committee

The parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tapes involving Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has officially declared that the police chief will be summoned to appear before the committee on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

The committee has made this decision in order to provide the Inspector General of Police (IGP) with a chance to present his viewpoint regarding the allegations made against him by certain senior police officers, who were recorded in a conspiracy to remove him from his position.

During an interview conducted on JoyNews’ The Probe, Samuel Atta Akyea expressed that on Tuesday, those in question, which are Chief Daniel Bugri Naabu, Supt. George L. Asare, COP George Alex Mensah, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi would be returning accompanied by their legal representatives.

He emphasized the importance of the Inspector General of Police, whose name has been widely discussed, appearing with his lawyers. Since the issues being discussed are delicate, the hearing’s chairman stated that it would take place behind closed doors.

“Some serious allegations have been made in public, but the substance of the allegations has not been made in public. That is to say, the evidential support for those allegations is what we are going to unearth, so which piece of evidence that we’ll give to the public that will not hurt national security, we’ll exercise that discretion,” he noted.

The committee’s goal is not to appoint a new IGP or to damage the reputation of the current IGP, as Chairman Atta Akyea stated. However, the committee is dedicated to ensuring that the IGP receives an appropriate and unbiased evaluation as well as the chance to respond to the accusations made against him.

“I don’t believe it will come there; that the IGP will say, I am not going to come to Parliament,’ when he has a whole opportunity to hallow his name,” he added.

The chairman has proposed a three-hour closed session to be followed by public disclosure whenever it is deemed appropriate. Nonetheless, he stressed that safeguarding national security is still a top concern when making such choices.
