Former British And Commonwealth Boxing Champion Willie Limond Is Dead

Former British and Commonwealth champion Willie Limond has died at the age of 45. Limond’s untimely demise occurred last week while he was preparing for an upcoming fight.

A statement from the Scot’s boxing club read: “Everyone at St Andrew’s Sporting Club is shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of our friend, Willie Limond.

“Willie was not only a legend of the sport, but an infectious character who will be greatly missed by us all.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jake, Drew, Macy and the rest of the Limond family at this time.”

Limond’s professional boxing career commenced in 1999 with a victory over journeyman Lenny Hodgkins. He then went on to defeat several super featherweights, including the renowned Choi Tseveenpurev, who would later become the WBU featherweight champion and IBO world title challenger.

This paved the way for a highly anticipated clash with his fellow Scotsman, “Amazing” Alex Arthur, for the British Super featherweight title on December 12, 2003, at the Braehad Arena in Glasgow.

Both fighters entered the ring with undefeated records, making it the most significant all-Scottish bout for the British title in three decades.

Unfortunately, Limond’s aspirations of claiming the British championship were dashed as the future-WBO World champion, Alex Arthur, proved to be too formidable, resulting in Limond’s defeat by TKO in the 8th round. Despite rumors of a potential rematch, it never materialized.

After suffering a setback against Anthony Crolla, Willie made a triumphant comeback by securing a straightforward victory over Englishman William Warburton in Dundee. This victory came after Willie decided to move up from lightweight to light welterweight.

The year 2013 started with a bang for Willie Limond as he faced off against fellow Scot Eddie Doyle, who held the title of unbeaten British masters champion.

In a display of skill and dominance, Limond knocked down his younger opponent twice before ultimately winning the match in the first round through a technical knockout (TKO).
