Galamsey Thugs Who Attacked Police Patrol Team Arrested

Following an attack on a police patrol squad in Axim, Western Region, Kwame Ato Asare, also known as Kwame Ani, has been taken into custody by the police, a month after the incident happened.

Following the incident, Kwame Ani, who had been the police’s top suspect, fled into hiding. However, he was giving interviews to the media and accusing the crime officer, the commander of the Axim District Police, and other police of extortion.

According to the latest news we culled from 3News, together with three other suspects, Williams Kwofie, Richard Kwesi, and Emmanuel Kojo Bronie, Kwame Ani was detained on Friday, April 21 in a community close to Enchi in the Western North Region. The total number of suspects detained in connection with the incident now stands at eight.

“With his arrest, Kwame Ato Asare is expected to assist the investigation into the said allegations and any Police officer found culpable will be put through the due process to be sanctioned in accordance with the laws of the country,” the police said in its statement.

A few weeks ago, a video went viral which captured a group of illegal miners assaulting some police officers. In the video, one of the illegal miners can be heard complaining to the person filming the video that the police officer refused to release him after receiving money (a bribe for an unspecified offence).

The illegal miner proceeded toward a different officer after giving his side of the story and appeared to grab something that resembled a machete from his rucksack in an effort to frighten him.

Another one of the illegal miners went inside the nearby police car that was parked and removed the keys. Another video frame shows a male police officer pleading for mercy as a group of illegal miners encircle him.

It was audible that the policeman, who was on his knees, begged the enraged illegal miners not to hurt him and acknowledged his mistake. The 2 minutes, 12-second footage doesn’t reveal where the incident happened. Uncertainty surrounds what the illegal miners did to the police officers before the film abruptly came to a stop.
