The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has issued a statement denouncing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for utilizing their conference platform as a means to campaign against former President John Mahama.
“And also bringing up the issue of the investigations allegedly linking former President Mahama to the Airbus scandal. Our platform is not supposed to be used for that, and then we condemn that leg of President Akufo-Addo’s comment. We are not going to allow anybody to use our platform to campaign politically for or against the opponent.”
The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has stated that it will not issue an apology to Mahama, as its previous condemnation of his actions was based on his past behavior. On Monday, Akufo-Addo strongly criticized Mahama for his recent remarks, in which he alleged that the judiciary was filled with judges aligned with the ruling NPP party.
Akufo-Addo deemed these comments “very dangerous” and a “brazen attack on the independence of the judiciary.” While the GBA shares Akufo-Addo’s concerns about the independence of the judiciary, it disagrees with his approach.
“The GBA believes that the best way to protect the independence of the judiciary is to ensure that all politicians, regardless of their party affiliation, respect the rule of law and the separation of powers,” the statement said.
The association called on all politicians to refrain from making political statements at its conferences and to respect the neutrality of the legal profession.
This development was recently highlighted in Paul Adom Okyere’s Good Evening Ghana, which aired on Metro TV. Thereafter, he took to the official page of the program on Facebook to ask Ghanaians to share their opinions on the matter, as seen in the post below.
