Government Reacts To Rumours That It Plans To Remove IGP Dampare Ahead Of 2024 Elections

The government has disputed claims that the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, may be fired in the run-up to the 2024 elections

According to a recording that has been circulating online, Dr. Dampare is being plotted against because he is too tough and will not allow the 2024 election to be rigged.

GHone TV tweeted a recording purportedly of the retiring police commissioner advising an NPP politician that they should not think about winning the next general election as long as the current IGP is in charge.

Commissioner Mensa used the IGP’s tight security during the recent Assin North by-election to win over the politician, promising the same level of protection and promising to go even farther if necessary to prevent the NPP from stealing the 2024 election.

In light of the leaked recording, the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery has denied the charges. In a news conference held in Parliament on July 11, 2023, he asked the general public to ignore them.

He denied that such a plot existed against the Inspector General of Police and emphasised the need to protect the police force’s credibility and impartiality throughout the electoral process by saying, “Tapes will be useful if they relate to a crime, but otherwise No. But I haven’t made that determination about whether this is criminal or not. Let me make it clear that this government is not going to tamper with the 2024 elections. The president does not want to stay one more hour beyond his term. We also want to make sure that we have a free and fair election.”
