Johanna Mazibuko, Believed To Be World’s Oldest Person, Passes Away At 128

Johanna Mazibuko, a South African woman believed to be the oldest person in the world, passed away on March 3 at her home in Jouberton, North West Province. She would have turned 129 in May, according to local reports.

She was born on May 11, 1894, and she lived for 300 years. Mazibuko had seven children and more than fifty grandchildren and great-grandchildren. According to her acquaintances, she never attended school and cannot read or write.

Thandiwe Wesinyana, her caregiver and daughter-in-law, told News24 that Mazibuko may have died of a stroke.

Mazibuko expressed amazement on her 128th birthday as to why she was still alive after so many years: “I am amazed at why I am still here after so many years. Why am I still here? People around me have been dying.”

“When will I die? What’s the point of being alive? The world has tired me because I am just sitting here doing nothing,” she said.

Wesinyana admitted Mazibuko to the hospital for treatment of a stroke on February 14, and she was discharged on February 28 before passing away the following day.

On Saturday, Mazibuko will be buried in Jouberton, Klerksdorp. She was one of twelve siblings, three of whom are still alive.
