Kwame Sefa Kayi Expresses His Frustration At NACOC’s For Burning Of Gh50 Million Worth Of ‘Weed’

Ghanaian media personality, broadcast journalist and public speaker Kwami Sefa Kayi also known as Chairman General has expressed his frustration over the Narcotics Control Commission’s decision to destroy cannabis with an estimated total worth of GH$50 million (NACOC).

Kwami Sefa Kay commented on the story during a discussion on Kokrokoo morning show on Peace FM, saying that there are other economic and medicinal benefits of cannabis in addition to those related to mental health and recreation, despite the conversation around the problem focusing mostly on these two topics.

“I suppose people are bringing up mental health because the conversation has been limited to smoking and recreation. But, to be honest, it has pain me that they burnt those cannabis” he emphasized.

Despite the legalization of cannabis for medical and industrial purposes, it is still illegal to harvest and use the herb in Ghana.

On February 9, 2023, the Narcotics Control Commission reported that it had burned about 50 tonnes of the seized marijuana. In the Greater Accra Region, near the Bundase Military Camp, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) destroyed a quantity of marijuana estimated to be worth GH50,000,000. This quantity equates to 50,000 kilograms, or 50 tons.

The two-day destruction exercise is in compliance with Act 1019, which mandates that NACOC seize, investigate, and prosecute offenders, as well as destroy narcotic products after following all legal procedures.
