Lydia Forson Demands Probe Into Kennedy Agyapong’s $800m Bribe Allegations

Lydia Forson has expressed her dissatisfaction on Twitter regarding the statements made by Kennedy Agyapong, claiming that he was promised a significant amount of money by some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to withdraw from the upcoming November 4 ‘showdown.’

In a passionate manner, Forson criticized the substantial sum of money offered to Agyapong, suggesting that it could have been better utilized to purchase beds for hospitals and enhance other aspects of our development. The renowned Filmmaker and producer of “Letter to Adam” emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to authenticate the truthfulness of Agyapong’s claim.

Furthermore, she called for the prosecution of individuals involved in this apparent abuse of power and corruption. She reshared a video of Kennedy Agpaong making those claims and wrote,

My question is, why aren’t these allegations being investigated and people jailed? Beyond pissing us off in the hopes of getting us to vote against them, what else can we do with this information? $800 million when we don’t have hospital beds and no ones is going to jail?

Background

These remarks were made in response to Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s denial of allegations made by former Member of Parliament for Suhum, Frederick Opare-Ansah.

Opare-Ansah had accused Agyapong of demanding $500 million in annual contracts from Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a condition to withdraw from his bid for the party’s flagbearership. During an interview on Time FM on Sunday, October 29, 2023, Agyapong refuted these allegations and instead claimed that he was offered $800 million to step down from the race in favor of Dr Bawumia.

Opare-Ansah, who launched a media campaign against Agyapong, accused him of harboring bitterness and contesting the flagbearership solely to spite Dr Bawumia after his request was rejected. Agyapong, on the other hand, maintained that his decision to run for the presidency is driven by the public interest and he remains resolute in his pursuit.

“Does he know the number of people who have approached me but for the love of Ghana and the delegates I have said I will never do it.

“The money they offered is $800 million if he doesn’t know. He should ask Mr Oppong Bio, if that is what they are saying but I said no I will not step down, Ghana first.

“In 2016, you people were not able to buy pickups. How come today you are able to offer me $800 million? So I said I won’t step down…” he stated.

“Why would I take all this money for Ghana to go through hardship, I won’t do it and I have not done it. Beside that, a number of elders have called on me begging me to step down and become vice president.

“But if you make me vice president, I have been told to my face that the only way they (grassroots) will be voting for me is if I am leading Ghana but I have been told that if I bring those who have served under this government, they won’t vote for me. So why should I even step down for us to go to opposition? I won’t do it,” he said.
