Bar Oyibo Chukwu, who was running for senator in Enugu East for the Labour Party (LP), was murdered when his convoy was ambushed three days before the elections for president and senator.
Nigerian police and a party official have confirmed that a senatorial candidate for the opposition Labour Party was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in Enugu State, located in the country’s southeastern region, only weeks before the country’s general election.
According to Chinwuba Ngwu, the chairman of the Labour Party in the Enugu South local government area, Oyibo Chukwu was attacked and assassinated on his way home after a campaign event on Wednesday night.
The murder was verified by police only hours after parties and presidential contenders signed a vow to promote a peaceful voting process in advance of Saturday’s general election. A representative for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu stated that the commission has the authority under electoral law to reschedule an election within 14 days in the case of a candidate’s death.
Nonetheless, he stated that procedures must be followed and that no decision has been taken in this instance.
Nigerians are set to vote for a new president and legislature despite widespread violence, currency, petrol, and electricity shortages, and an ongoing military conflict in the country’s northeast. Some individuals are anxious about the upcoming elections, while others warn others not to venture too far from the city center or take long trips in unfamiliar vehicles for fear of being abducted.
After serving the maximum of two terms permitted by the Constitution, President Muhammadu Buhari has decided to stand aside, and the three-man race to follow him is widely regarded as the most unexpected in recent Nigerian history.
