Obiri Boahen Criticises The Minority For Opposing The EC’s New Constitutional Instrument

Nana Obiri Boahen, a former deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to criticise the new Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) proposed by the Electoral Commission, but instead to focus on other vital issues bordering the country.

Jean Mensa, chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has defended the EC’s plan to make the Ghana Card the only way to register to vote. The New Constitutional Instrument seeks to promote continuous voter registration, so eligible voters will be able to sign up at district offices throughout the year. Members of Parliament from the minority party have criticized the move, claiming that the EC is attempting to manipulate the 2024 general election.

In response to recent events, Obiri Boahen said that the minority is always ready to fight any new plan by the NPP government, even though the country has much bigger problems to deal with.

In an interview sighted by Tru News Report on Neat FM, Nana Obiri Boahen stated that if the proposed C.I. is implemented and the minority attempts to fight the proposed C.I. in court, it would be rejected.

“You’re not being fair to the judiciary; you’re not being fair to the judges; you’re not being fair to the systems; you’re not being fair to the EC. Why do you speculate? Myopic minds…sorry. If you take it to court, the judge will throw it out. Make a note of this: if this thing goes through and you go to court about it, the judge will throw out your case,” he said.
