Osu Mantse Sends ‘Strong’ Message To Ga Traditional Council For ‘Trespassing’ Over Ga Manye Funeral

The Chiefs and Elders of the Osu Stool have communicated with the Ga Traditional Council regarding the funeral of the Ga Manye.

In their correspondence, they reminded the Ga Traditional Council that the jurisdiction of the Osu land does not fall under their authority.

Consequently, the curfew directives imposed by the Ga Traditional Council do not apply to them. The key aspects of the funeral ceremony entail a prohibition on other funerals during the entirety of Ga Manye’s funeral proceedings, a curfew, and a restriction on trading activities.

“From October 15- 30, 2023, there will be funerals and noise-making throughout this period.
The main funeral will begin from October 23, 2023.

“On that day, we will bring the corpse of the late queen mother home for some customary rites and rituals. On October 24-25, 2023, there will be a curfew,” the Ga Traditional Council has previously said.

The message continued, “So inform all of your relatives in Accra, that there will be a curfew as a result of the customary rites that will be performed for the Ga Manye. Given that, when it is 6pm, everybody should be indoors so that we can perform that ritual.”

They added that only traders who sell essentials like food and pharmacy shops will be allowed to operate, all other shops and markets are expected to be closed on the stated dates.

“Between October 26-27, traders should not open their shop. People who sell essential stuff like foods or operate pharmacy shops can open but other traders, especially market women, must keep their shops closed,” he added.

However, as per a letter dated October 27, 2023, obtained by Tru News Report, the Osu leaders have asserted that the curfew has indeed been extended to their land, a situation they vehemently oppose. In light of this, the Chiefs have respectfully requested their counterparts from the Ga region to thoroughly investigate the matter and facilitate a mutually agreeable resolution.

The letter stated:

The Chiefs and Elders of the Osu Stool sends their compliments. It has come to the attention of the Osu Stool Secretariate that residents and institutions within the Osu Traditional Area are in a state of uncertainty about some directives issued by the Ga Traditional Council regarding restrictions of some activities in the Greater Accra Region from Thursday 26th day of October, 2023 to Saturday, 28th day of October, 2023 as part of activities in respect of the above-named subject.

We want to state without equivocation that, the Osu Traditional Area does not fall within the jurisdiction of the Ga Traditional Council. Therefore, the said directive does not affect residents and institutions within the Osu Traditional Area. We wish to formerly request your esteem outfit to issue a statement to that effect and further direct all residents and institutions within the traditional area to go about their businesses as scheduled. We count on your usual cooperation.
