Parliamentary Staff Trapped In Elevator As ECG Cuts Power Supply Over GHC23 Million Debt

Electricity supply to Parliament House and Job 600, the office complex for Members of Parliament, has been disconnected due to a GHc23 million debt owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The disconnection, executed by the National Taskforce on Thursday, February 29, is part of the ongoing “Operation Zero Balance” initiative by ECG to recover outstanding debts from various customers.

Efforts to collect the outstanding arrears from the parliamentary facilities proved futile before the disconnection.

The power outage lasted for close to three minutes before power was restored through a generator.

Amidst the power cut, Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, revealed that some Parliamentary Staff were trapped in the elevators on the fifth and sixth floors of the Job 600 building due to the sudden power outage.

Meanwhile, Nana Amoasi IV, the Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), has warned of potential ongoing power cuts in Ghana unless immediate actions are taken to address underlying challenges in the power sector, including installed capacity and fuel supply issues.
