People Advised Me Not To Attend The VGMA – King Promise

King Promise, a Ghanaian musician, has revealed that he was told to avoid the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) after being repeatedly nominated for awards but never actually winning one.

When King Promise released CCTV in 2019, it immediately became a smash success and earned him the VGMA Songwriter of the Year title. But after that, year after year, he never won anything up until the 24th VGMA music festival on Saturday, May 6, when he triumphed against Black Sheriff to claim Album of the Year and Afrobeats/Afropop Song of the Year.

In an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3, he explained that he had been advised to leave the programme but had decided not to do so out of respect for his fans and everyone who appreciates his music.

“Even with the VGMAs, there were times where I had advice from people who were like, cancel it, don’t go again. People say a lot of stuff, it’s up to you to make what you think of it.” he said.

According to King Promise, he knew that his supporters were behind him because “when I drop the music, it goes crazy, so I know the fans do support me... I always went still and performed; even when I didn’t win, I go the next year to perform, It’s about the fans for me.”

Even though he didn’t win any awards, King Promise promised that he wouldn’t stop composing music or performing for his fans. He continued by saying that he took home two trophies from the 2023 VGMAs thanks to his determination and love for his listeners.

“Awards or not, I was born to do this. I make this music from a special place, and it’s not because of awards. Yeah, so for that fact, when we get an award, we drop bangers. When we don’t get we still drop bangers. We just keep going,” he added.

Despite his absence, King Promise claimed album of the year at the recent Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2023. The album “5 Star” performed quite well upon its July 2022 release, making it his second body of work.
