Piesie Esther, Stonebwoy, Black Sherif Ties GMAUK23 Nominations With 7 ‘Nods’ Each, Sarkodie tops with 8 Nods

Rapper Sarkodie leads this year’s GMAUK nominations in 8 categories followed by Black Sherif and Ghanaian gospel musician Piesie Esther with 7 nominations each.

At a launch ceremony held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on Friday, August 4, 2023, the list of nominees for this year’s award ceremony was made public. The ceremony featured performances from Gospel songstress Mabel Okyere, Perez Musik, Lasmid, Epixode, Shegah, and FBS.

Ghana’s most decorated rapper, Sarkodie, got nominated in eight categories, including Rapper of the Year, Hiplife/Hip Hop Artiste of the Year, Hiplife/Hip Hop Song of the Year, Best Collaboration of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, Best Music Video, and the enviable Artiste of the Year categories.

Black Sherif got nominated in 7 categories, including Hiplife/Hip Hop Artiste of the Year, Hiplife/Hip Hop Song of the Year, Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, Artiste of the Year, and Best Music Video of the Year.

Stonebwoy made the cut with 7 nods as well, with nominations including Afrobeats Song of the Year for “Therapy,” Male Vocalist of the Year, and Artiste of the Year.

While Piesie Esther was nominated for Gospel Song of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, Artiste of the Year, and Best Music Video of the Year.

After their maiden event in 2016, the Ghana Music Awards UK are now in their seventh year. Even though the awards ceremony takes place in London, it usually kicks off in Ghana to grab the attention of the country.

Last year, Hip-hop musician Black Sherif swept the night’s prizes, taking home a total of five awards (including Musician of the Year). Akwaboah, a highlife singer and songwriter, got three awards, and Eugy and Headie One won two each.

The main award ceremony is scheduled for October 7, 2023, at the Royal Regency London.
