President Akufo-Addo Commissions €11.5M Water Supply Project In Volta Region

On Monday, July 3, President Nana Akufo-Addo officially inaugurated Phase Three of the Five Districts Water Supply Project in Adaklu, Volta Region.

The project, which Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank International AG funded with a concessionary facility for €11.5 million, will benefit an estimated 89,150 residents living in 95 communities across Central Tongu, Adaklu, and Agotime-Ziope.

While speaking to a crowd in Adaklu, President Akufo-Addo mentioned several key features of the Project, including the installation of a water booster station in Adaklu Kpeleho, the construction of three concrete tanks at Adaklu Kpeleho, Adaklu Sofa, and Adaklu Kpatove to help keep the water safe from any bacteria, and the laying of 175 kilometres of water pipelines.

The President assured the crowd that the government’s main focus is providing enough, safe, affordable, and reliable water services to all Communities across the country.

“We are also committed to ensuring that we practise safe sanitation and hygiene by the year 2030, in line with the attainment of the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our strategic goal is to use a multi-faceted approach, with emphasis on governance and sector institutional strengthening, to accelerate access to equitable WASH services throughout Ghana,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo stated that his administration has made tremendous progress towards its goal of providing clean water and sanitation for all citizens.

“That Project seeks to expand access to and ensure sustainable services in thirty-six (36) rural and small towns and communities in the Ho, Ho West, Agotime-Ziope, and South Dayi Districts. Outstanding works are expected to be completed by March next year. Again, on June 30, 2020, I also commissioned Cluster Water Systems at Bontrase and Amasamkrom in the Central Region, as part of the Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project (SRWSP).

“These commissioning ceremonies were done to symbolise the completion of similar water systems implemented in 11 out of the 16 regions of the country, and they were financed from a US$47.5 million credit facility from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank.”

He further emphasised that the regions of Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Western, Western North, Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper West, and Upper East and 164 localities with a total population of 154,826 would benefit from the Project.

There are about 282,000 people in the Volta, Oti, Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions who will benefit from the government’s efforts to improve access to sustainable water delivery under the Rural Communities and Small Towns Water Supply Project (RCSTWSP).
