Read: Why Akufo-Addo And Finance Minister Should Resign – Kojo Yankson Explains

Ghanaian journalist Kojo Yankson has firmly expressed his belief that it would be justifiable for Nana Akufo-Addo and Ken Ofori Atta, the finance minister, to resign in light of their poor performance in managing the economy and governing the country.

Furthermore, with the increasing hardships faced by the population and the constant imposition of new taxes, it is evident that they have lost control and should step down from their positions, Kojo Yankson asserts.

During an appearance on The Super Morning Show on Thursday, January 11, 2024, Yankson, a respected broadcaster associated with Joy FM, specifically criticized the recently implemented Value Added Tax (VAT). He highlighted the administration’s lack of significant accomplishments and called for a change in leadership.

Yankson stated, “If it wasn’t for the fact that somebody will come and tell me I am being political, I would have said that the finance minister and his president should all pack their bags and leave because to be perfectly honest, there is nothing beyond failure that they can put their hands on their chest to claim ownership over because at this point the suffering is just too much “

He emphasized the need for a reshuffling of ministers within the government to address underperforming officials.

In a related development, the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Electricity Company of Ghana, and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company have been directed by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to implement a VAT on residential customers who exceed the specified lifeline power consumption.

Furthermore, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union has confirmed its intentions to introduce a 60% increase in transport fares in 2024, aligning with the introduction of the Emission Levy Bill in January 2024. These newly imposed taxes have only added to the growing discontent among the Ghanaian public, exacerbating their grievances over the escalating cost of living.

By a copy of this letter, GRA is requested to ensure that it liaises with ECG and NEDCO for the transfer of the revenues collected from the implementation of VAT on the subject matter as part of its domestic VAT collections,” the December 12, 2023, release read.
