Saglemi Housing Project: Mahama Built 1500 Units Instead Of 5000- NPP’s Richard Ahiagbah Blows Alarm

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has said that John Dramani Mahama should have built 5000 units from the $200 million earmarked for the Saglemi Housing project instead of the 1500 units his administration built.

For this reason, the NPP stalwart says the former president has no right to be pointing accusing fingers at the incumbent president over corruption claims since the aforementioned housing project was botched and people’s heads need to roll.

He said this in response to Mahama’s assertion that the government’s wrong priorities are the reason it is unable to raise enough money to finish the Saglemi housing project. The Saglemi Housing Project, which had been initiated by Mahama, will not be continued or finished, according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He said that in an effort to finish the Saglemi Housing Project, the government will take on extra debt.

Ahiagbah, who joined the discussion over the failed Saglemi project, said he was perplexed that Mahama continued to bring up the scandalous Saglemi project. Speaking on Citi FM in Accra, Ahiagbah said it was astounding that NDC members, Mahama in particular, could brazenly discuss such a scandalous initiative as though it were a success.

“The only reason the NDC and in particular, former president John Mahama can stand anywhere and point to Saglemi as though it is an achievement is that nobody is in jail as we speak because that project is a scandal. One that we should be angry about and charge at the NDC,” he added.

He stated that “The whole thing is a scandal on its own because how do you go take a loan of $200 million to construct over 5000 apartments and end up constructing 1500 yet have expended the entire $200 million?

“The contract that Parliament approved was for 5000 buildings but what we have there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 and former president Mahama revised the contract without reference to Parliament.”

Saglemi housing project is a public housing project located in Prampram in the Ningo Prampram district in the Greater Accra Region.
