Vote For Me And I’ll Abolish E-Levy, Betting Tax – Bawumia Tells Ghanaians

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, has made a bold pledge to abolish several controversial taxes if elected as President of Ghana.

In a significant declaration, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to eliminate the contentious e-levy, bet tax, emissions tax, and the proposed 15% VAT on electricity tariffs.

This announcement follows the introduction of the e-levy in 2022, a tax that Vice President Bawumia had previously opposed.

Despite maintaining silence on the issue, Dr. Bawumia firmly stated his opposition to taxes on electronic financial transactions during his first major address to the nation as the NPP flagbearer.

He emphasized the importance of promoting a cashless economy and outlined his vision to encourage the use of electronic payment channels in Ghana.

“To move towards a cashless economy, however, we have to encourage the population to use electronic channels of payment. To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will, therefore, be abolished,” he declared.

He also revealed his aim to create a flat tax structure that benefits individuals and small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).

Under his proposed tax plan, a flat percentage of income for individuals and SMEs would be implemented, with exemption thresholds to protect economically disadvantaged groups.
