UTV Attack: Court Fines NPP Thugs GHC38,400

The Achimota Magistrate Court has found sixteen members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) guilty and fined each of them GHC$2400  for their involvement in the attack on United Television’s (UTV) headquarters.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, there was a disturbance during the station’s popular show, ‘United Showbiz.’ The individuals in question were accused of engaging in a conspiracy to carry out a criminal act and taking part in chaos.

They were found guilty of these charges after entering a guilty plea. On that Saturday, as ‘United Showbiz’ was airing live, the studio door of UTV was broken down and a group of thugs barged in.

They caused a commotion and made threats to the host and guests on the show. It was later discovered that the attackers were led by the NPP’s Klottey Korle Youth Organiser, who was purportedly carrying out orders from Ernest Owusu Bempah, the Deputy Director of Communications, and other high-ranking members of the ruling party.

According to reports, the attack was triggered Kwame A Plus tore up a letter from the NPP leadership demanding panel changes on the show. The Ghana Journalists Association, the Ministry of Information, and many others issued strong statements condemning the invasion by NPP supporters.

In light of the widespread criticism, Stephen Ntim, the National Chairman of the NPP, assumed accountability and expressed an unqualified apology to the management of UTV. Chairman Ntim expressed his disapproval of the actions carried out by the people associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during his appearance on Peace FM, a public platform.

Chairman Ntim apologized and promised the party leadership would take action to prevent such disgusting acts from happening in the future.
