Why I Picked Bawumia As My Vice – Akufo-Addo Reveals

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has disclosed the reason behind his choice of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as running mate and subsequently vice president of Ghana.

The President has emphasized that he selected Bawumia as his running mate and subsequent Vice President due to his exceptional intelligence and unwavering honesty.

Akufo-Addo further praised Dr Bawumia, acknowledging his astuteness and stating that he required his expertise to effectively govern the nation.

Over the course of four general elections, namely in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020, President Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia, an esteemed economist, joined forces as presidential and vice presidential candidates respectively. Although they faced defeat in the first two elections, they emerged victorious in the subsequent ones.

During a visit to the Jubilee House on Thursday, October 26, President Akufo-Addo responded to a student from the Association International School who inquired about his decision to choose the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Akufo-Addo highlighted the significance of maintaining a balanced representation of individuals from both the South and the North regions of the country. Here’s what he said;

“I think you are aware of our country in terms of the balance of people from the South, and people from the North.

“I think that for the unity of the country, it is good that we have a leadership where Northerners and Southerners are together so that the country can remain united. He is from the north and I wanted somebody from the North to partner me for the elections and then for the governance.

“He is also a very clever man and I needed his brain to help me govern the country effectively, he is an honest person, and he speaks his honesty, he is not one of those people who you have to guess what they try to say, he says what has to say very directly and I like that,  I prefer to deal with people who are also very direct, these are some of the reasons i chose Dr. Bawumia to be my vice president.”
