In a triumphant turn of events, Tyrone Marhguy, the young Rastafarian student who faced initial denial of admission to Achimota School due to his dreadlocks, has clinched two prestigious awards at the American Mathematics Olympiad 2023 for his exceptional accomplishments in Grade 12.

Marhguy secured the title of the 2023 overall national top scorer, attaining the Gold medal after competing against more than 150,000 students globally. Additionally, he was honored with the Silver category in the Vanda Science International Olympiad, surpassing 38,000 test-takers.

Notably, Marhguy has been officially inducted into the International Junior Honour Society for the year 2023, a recognition that adds to his growing list of achievements.

The awards ceremony, held at the Chartered Institute of Bankers Hall in Accra on December 29, 2023, aimed to celebrate outstanding students, teachers, and contributors in the educational realm for the ATDP and Olympiad 2022 Academic Season.

Reflecting on his accomplishments, Marhguy expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s amazing and interesting to have the awards, it was science and some other stuff. I feel excited to have this opportunity to experience non-Ghanaian problem-solving.”

This remarkable achievement follows Marhguy’s outstanding performance in the West African Senior Secondary School Examinations (WASSCE) on December 19, where he secured an impressive 8 As.

This triumph comes after a challenging journey, marked by a highly publicized school admission rejection that ignited a nationwide debate on discrimination. Ultimately, Marhguy and his fellow students emerged victorious with a landmark court ruling in their favor.
