Asamoah Gyan Retires From Football

Ghana’s most prolific striker of all time, Asamoah Gyan has finally announced his retirement from football.

The former Sunderland forward made the announcement in a press statement on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

“It is time…that voice has been clear in my ears, and I have succumbed to it, IT IS TIME. IT IS TIME TO HANG THE JERSEY AND BOOTS IN GLORY as I retire officially from active football”.

Gyan began his professional career in 2003 with Liberty Professionals in Ghana. He then went on to play for clubs in France, England, Turkey, China, and the United Arab Emirates.

In his statement, Gyan said he plans to continue working in football after his retirement.

He spent three seasons with Serie A club Udinese after two seasons on loan at Modena, where he scored fifteen goals in 53 league games, and at Udinese, where he scored eleven goals in 39 league games.

After moving to Rennes in 2008, Gyan scored fourteen goals in 48 league games over the course of two seasons. Gyan broke Sunderland’s transfer record to join the Premier League team in 2010, and over the course of two seasons, scored ten goals in thirty-four Premier League games.

Gyan joined UAE Pro-League team Al Ain on loan in 2011 and quickly established himself as the league’s leading scorer with 24 goals in 27 games.

The next season, Gyan made a long-term commitment to Al Ain and once again emerged as the league’s leading scorer as he assisted Al Ain in defending their UAE Pro-League championship by tallying an astounding 28 goals in 32 games.

Gyan scored 44 goals in 40 games for Al Ain in the 2013–14 season. With 51 goals, Gyan holds the record for most goals scored by a member of the Ghanaian national team. At the 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups, he represented Ghana.

He is the leading African scorer in World Cup history with six goals. As a representative of Ghana, Gyan also competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics and seven editions of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, helping Ghana finish third in 2008 and second in 2010 and 2015. At the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra, he released his autobiography, “LeGYANdry.”
