Efya’s Biography

Jane Fara Fauzzier Afia Boafowaa Yahaya Awindor, born April 10, 1987, is a Ghanaian singer, songwriter, and actress best known by her stage name Efya. She is the daughter of the late filmmaker and celebrity presenter of the television programme Greetings From Abroad, Nana Adwoa Awindor. She was born in Kumasi, a city in Ghana.

She has two brothers and one sibling. Efya attended Yaa Asantewaa Secondary School for her secondary education. When her mother enrolled at the National Film and Television Institute, she moved to Accra. Some of Efya’s family members began training her voice at a very tender age. She earned a bachelor’s degree in theatre and music from the University of Ghana.

Music Career

Efya’s first exposure to fame occurred when she participated in the inaugural Charterhouse’s Stars of the Future television show.

She was defeated by Irene Logan, but secured a three-year recording contract. The agreement allowed her and Irene to issue a collaborative album titled Unveiled in South Africa under the name Miss Jane. After her recording contract with Charterhouse expired, Efya continued to record songs and perform at local venues. Prior to going solo, she changed her stage name from Miss Jane to Efya.

Efya inked a recording contract with One Nation Entertainment in 2011. T.I.N.T, her first mixtape, was released on November 12, 2013. The mixtape, whose title is an acronym for This Is Not The Album, consists of thirteen tracks. The singles “Getaway” and “Best in Me” helped to promote the EP. The songs on T.I.N.T were all released between 2011 and 2013.

On April 22, 2016, Efya released her debut studio album, “Janesis.” The original release date was the third quarter of 2013. However, the release date wad been delayed. The album’s main single “Forgetting Me” was released in January 11, 2014. Prince Dovlo of Seven Streets Entertainment directed the accompanying music video.

As the second single from the album, “One of Your Own” featuring Bisa Kdei was released on July 16, 2014. The Kaywa-produced track “Gingam Too Much” was also released as the album’s third single on December 26, 2014.

On May 8, 2016, she was announced as one of Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment’s newly signed artistes. Following Wizkid’s performance at the Ghana Music Awards, the announcement was made. In March 2021, 3Music Network ranked Efya among the top 30 most influential women in music.

Wizkid dropped the single “Daddy Yo” on December 23, 2016, with uncredited vocals by Efya. Nevertheless, Efya appears in the music video. Efya released the reggae-influenced song “Until the Dawn” on June 10, 2017. It was produced by Nigerian-born British record producer and musician Maleek Berry.

In December of 2019, Efya launched the apparel line The Native Chic. She worked with Tiwa Savage on her song “The One.”
